How It All Started

The Almond in North Cyprus, located in Alsancak (Karavas) within the Kyrenia District, was built from scratch through a tremendous amount of hard work, belief, and passion by its current owner and director, Mr. Ali Riza Asik. He purchased the dry plot of land in 1994, which at the time was occupied with dead trees. Only a few wild almond trees managed to survive the historical lack of water and attention prior to the purchase. The beauty of these flowering almonds—the eternal symbol of love, hope, and constancy—bewildered Ali, inspiring the resort's name and the story behind its logo.

The Almond officially opened its doors to business on April 16, 1999. Since then, Ali, Dervi?e, and their children—Gülten, Ahmet, Ay?e, and Afet—have been proudly running their much-loved business together. The family views their business as welcoming guests directly into their own home, aiming to ensure each and every guest enjoys a comfortable, memorable stay while discovering Northern Cyprus. The Mythology of the "Flowering Almonds"

In mythology, there lived in Thrace a beautiful princess named Phyllis (Greek: Φυλλίς/ Turkish: Filiz), the daughter of the Thracian king Sithon. She fell deeply in love with Demophon, the son of Theseus, the mythical king and founder-hero of Athens. Demophon fought bravely in the Trojan War and was one of the soldiers who famously entered the city inside the Trojan horse. On his journey back to Athens, he stopped in Thrace, visited the court of King Sithon, met Phyllis, and fell in love with her. They married, but after a short time, Demophon began to grow nostalgic for his homeland. Phyllis, not wanting to see him unhappy, agreed that he should return to Athens for a brief visit, trusting that if Demophon truly loved her, he would soon return.

However, time passed and Demophon did not return. One version of the story tells how Phyllis began to pine and wither while waiting for her lover, eventually dying of sorrow. Seeking to save her memory, the gods turned her into an almond tree so that she could continue to wait for her lover. When Demophon finally returned, he was struck with grief to find his wife transformed into a dried-out tree without leaves in a cold landscape. In desperation and guilt, he wrapped his arms tightly around the trunk of the tree. Immediately, the dried branches bloomed into small pink-white flowers and sprouted green leaves in the middle of winter, winning a victory over death. The blossoming almond tree thus became a timeless symbol of true love unconquerable by death, constancy, and eternal hope.
