How It All Started...
The Almond in North Cyprus, Alsancak – Karavas, Kyrenia District was built from scratch with a tremendous amount of hard work, belief & passion by current owner and director Mr. Ali Riza Asik. He bought the land in 1994, which was very dry and occupied with dead trees… Only a few trees to include “wild almond trees“ survived the lack of water and attention before purchase…But the beauty of the “Flowering Almonds” – “The Eternal Symbol of Love, Hope & Constancy” bewildered Ali, thus giving us our name…and the story behind our logo…
The Almond, officially opened their doors to business on the 16th of April 1999. Since then Ali, Dervişe and their children, Gülten, Ahmet, Ayşe & Afet have been proudly running their much loved business together. The family sees their business as welcoming guests to their own home and their aim is to make sure each and every guest has a comfortable & memorable stay and enjoy Northern Cyprus as well as The Almond. We guarantee that the exceptional & incomparable Cypriot family hospitality & an overwhelming Mediterranean ambiance created with 100% traditional Cypriot heritage and a passionate dedication to detail will touch your heart forever…
“Flowering Almonds” – In Mythology….There lived in Thrace a beautiful princess. Her name was Phyllis (Greek: Φυλλίς/ Turkish: Filiz) daughter of the Thracian king Sithon. She fell in love with Demophon son of Theseus, the mythical king and founder-hero of Athens. Demophon fought in the Trojan War and was one of the 30 of 40 soldiers that entered the city in the Trojan horse. On his way back to Athens, he stopped off in Thrace and went to the courtof King Sithon where he met Phyllis and fell in love with her. They married, but after a while, Demophon began to become nostalgic for his homeland. Phyllis did not want to see him sad and so agreed that he should return to Athens for a short visit. She felt that if Demophon really loved her, he would soon return to her. However, time passed and Demophon did not return. One version of the story tells how Phylllis began to pine and wither while waiting for her lover and finally died of sorrow. However, the gods wanted to save her and so turned her into an almond tree so that she could continue to wait for her lover. When Demophon finally returned, he could not believe that his wife was a dried out tree without leaves in a cold environment. In desperation and guilt, he wound his arms around the trunk of the tree and immediately the dried branches of the trees bloomed into small pink-white flowers and sprouted leaves in the middles of winter thus winning a victory over death. The blossoming almond tree became a symbol of true love – unconquerable by death, constancy & eternal hope.
