Green turtles and loggerheads

SPOT’s conservation work in northern Cyprus includes both green turtles and loggerheads. Observe with the team rather than trying to approach nesting animals or handle hatchlings independently.

Nesting and hatching seasons

Turtle activity is seasonal and does not follow a visitor’s booking calendar. The broad period runs through the warmer months, with nesting and later hatching activities offered at different stages. For actual dates, use SPOT’s current visitor information; do not use a previous year’s timetable.

Book through the conservation team

Use the SPOT Alagadi night-watch booking page for its current arrangements. Other activities may use a different booking process or be announced at short notice. Confirm the meeting location, footwear, expected duration and cancellation instructions directly.

Conservation rules and night access

The nesting beach has restricted night access during the season. Join an authorised activity and follow the guide’s instructions throughout. Do not treat a public daytime visit as permission to return after dark.

Visitor behaviour

Keep away from nests and protective markers, avoid disturbing tracks and never move a turtle or hatchling yourself. Let the team decide the distance and timing of an encounter. A quiet visit with no sighting is preferable to disrupting an animal.

Photography and lights

Ask the guide before using any camera, phone screen or torch. Keep flash and bright light off unless specifically instructed otherwise. Do not introduce drones or lighting to obtain a photograph, and follow any stricter instructions on the night.

Getting there from Kyrenia

Alagadi lies east of Kyrenia. Use the conservation team’s meeting-point directions, as a beach map pin may not identify the correct centre. Arrange car hire or a return taxi in advance if the activity finishes late; do not rely on finding transport on the beach.

What to bring

Follow the current booking instructions, including footwear. Carry drinking water and a layer for a cooler late evening. Keep the load manageable so you can move with the group, and ask in advance about access needs or suitability for young children.

Nearby accommodation

Use the Kyrenia-area hotel collection to compare coastal bases. Check the final driving distance to the meeting point rather than assuming every hotel with Kyrenia in its address is equally close.

Seasonal information and a daytime alternative

This page’s review date records an editorial check, not confirmation of a particular event. Recheck SPOT before travelling. If no activity is available, choose a respectful daytime visit and another outing from the Kyrenia guide.
