A fortification within the walls
Othello Tower, also called Othello’s Castle, is part of Famagusta’s historic defences near the harbour. The name evokes Shakespeare, but the masonry and fortifications are the real reason to visit. Treat literary stories as associations rather than proof that the play was set at the site. Check what parts of the fort are currently open before setting a visit time.
Explore safely
Historic steps, exposed sections and uneven surfaces call for stable shoes and attention to barriers. Take water in summer and allow a slower pace. Rules on access, tickets and photography can change; follow the signs on site. The Famagusta guide places the tower within a broader walk through the walled city.
Add nearby streets
Make the tower one stop in the old town, then walk toward the streets around Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque if time and conditions allow. Respect active worship and check visitor rules. A city visit is distinct from Salamis, which requires travel beyond the walls; see our Salamis guide before combining the two.
Plan the day around your base
From a Bafra resort or an İskele coast stay, check the actual drive and return transport rather than assuming you can walk into old Famagusta. Use the trip planner to group sights geographically. A local guide can add architectural context, but confirm their route and current opening details before booking.
