An introduction to the walled city

Start with a walk inside the walls, where distances between sights are more manageable than the spread-out coast. Put the main historical stops earlier in a hot day and allow a shaded break before continuing.

Top things to do

Make time for the streets around Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the waterfront fortifications and a separate visit to Salamis. Check access at active places of worship and dress respectfully. A short list with time to pause is more useful than a rushed checklist.

Salamis and major attractions

Salamis is an archaeological excursion outside the city rather than an old-town stop. Bring sun protection, water and footwear suitable for uneven ground. Our attractions guide gives context for combining it with other historical visits.

Varosha and restricted areas

Access arrangements around Varosha can change. Follow current barriers and signs, enter only areas open to visitors and avoid photography near military or otherwise restricted sites. Do not use an old blog itinerary as permission to enter a closed area.

Beaches along the east coast

Choose a beach by access, facilities and the conditions on the day. Do not assume that a hotel’s beach facilities are included for visitors. The coast around Salamis, Long Beach and Bafra covers different locations, with different journeys back to Famagusta.

Where to stay

A city base prioritises the old town; a coastal resort prioritises the beach. Browse our hotel directory and the Bafra hotel collection for a resort-led alternative. Bafra is not central Famagusta, so allow for the journey when planning sightseeing.

Food and restaurants

Look for a relaxed lunch inside the old town and leave room for a bakery or coffee stop. Ask about the day’s cooked dishes and the contents of meze rather than relying only on translated menu headings. For another city-food outing, see North Nicosia’s food guide.

Getting there

Your transfer destination should be the actual hotel or street address, not just “Famagusta”. The Larnaca arrival guide explains crossing considerations; airport operators can quote separately for Ercan and Larnaca.

Airport transfers

Use our transfer booking information to confirm the full route, waiting arrangements and final drop-off. For a late arrival, get both the driver’s contact and your accommodation’s check-in instructions.

Car hire and getting around

Compare car hire with a city stay plus separate excursions. Check parking before entering historic streets. For a rental collected on the other side of the island, read the cross-border driving considerations before paying.

Weather and timing

Plan exposed ruins and city walks for comfortable hours. The weather guide helps with seasonal planning, while a current forecast is needed for your dates. Keep an indoor or shorter alternative for extreme heat or rain.

Suggested day trips

Pair Salamis with the surrounding coast, or head towards Bafra and İskele on a separate day. For the far peninsula, use our two-day Karpaz itinerary rather than adding every stop to one return journey.
