The harbour landmark

Kyrenia Castle stands at the entrance to the town’s harbour. The fortifications visible today reflect different phases of use; look for the varied spaces and viewpoints rather than expecting a single-period monument. The castle also houses the shipwreck museum, known for an ancient merchant vessel recovered from local waters. Check whether museum rooms are open when planning your visit.

Give it enough time

Allow for interior displays and the walls, with breaks if the weather is hot. Steps and uneven stone are part of the experience, so wear suitable footwear and ask about accessible areas before paying. Current admission and opening hours may change. The harbour guide explains how to extend the visit without needing another transfer.

Build a Kyrenia day

Start at the castle before the warmest part of a summer day, then walk the harbour and old streets. A coffee or lunch stop can make the outing less rushed. See the broader Kyrenia travel guide for beaches, nearby villages and stay areas. If you want a second historic site, Bellapais requires a separate uphill journey.

Understand the island’s castles

Kyrenia is a coastal fortress, whereas St Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara are mountain sites with very different access demands. Our castle comparison helps you choose. Do not climb parapets or closed structures for a photograph, and follow any local rules for photography and exhibits.
