Four very different visits
Kyrenia Castle is a coastal fortress beside the harbour, with the shipwreck museum and a town walk nearby. St Hilarion rises above Kyrenia in stages. Buffavento demands a steeper and more remote climb. Kantara lies farther east, with broad views when conditions are clear. The names belong together historically, but they should not all be squeezed into one day.
Choose by ability and base
For a first, less strenuous castle day, start with Kyrenia Castle. If you want a mountain site, read the access notes for St Hilarion. Experienced walkers can consider Buffavento, while Kantara fits an eastern journey. Even an established visitor route can include steep steps and uneven ground.
Respect weather and opening
Carry water, secure shoes and sun protection, and turn back if wind or rain makes exposed stone unsafe. Confirm current access, ticket rules and any road restrictions before setting off. Sunset photographs are not a reason to descend an unfamiliar mountain route in the dark. A current forecast is more useful than a generic statement that the island is sunny.
Add context to the day
The mountain castles were built and adapted over time for defence and observation; interpretive details are best read on site or with a qualified guide. Pair one castle with a nearby meal or village rather than racing to the next fortress. Our tour guide lists questions to ask if you want help with transport and historical context.
