A castle above the coast

St Hilarion climbs a ridge of the Beşparmak range above Kyrenia. Its different levels make the visit feel like a walk through the mountain as well as a medieval site. The views are a reward, but a brief photo stop at the entrance misses much of the experience. Check current opening and any restricted sections before driving up.

Prepare for the climb

Expect steep steps, uneven stone and exposed stretches. Wear grippy shoes, carry water and allow more time than a flat-town attraction would need. Heat, rain or strong wind can change the safest plan, especially higher up. The seasonal packing guide covers the essentials; skip sections beyond your comfortable ability.

Plan transport and a second stop

A car or arranged tour is often the practical way to reach the entrance. Confirm the route, parking and return ride in advance. If you have energy for more sightseeing, pair the castle with Kyrenia or Bellapais Abbey, rather than attempting all three mountain castles in one day.

Understand the wider story

The castle is one of three major mountain strongholds, with Buffavento and Kantara farther along the range. Our North Cyprus castles guide compares them by access and trip style. Respect barriers and fragile structures, and do not assume a viewpoint seen in an old photograph is currently open.
