Plan by habitat and season

Cyprus lies on a major migration route, so spring and autumn can bring changing bird activity. A quiet coastal walk, a wetland viewpoint and a mountain path offer different habitats; no species is guaranteed on a particular day. BirdLife Cyprus provides island-wide birdwatching background, but its specific site guides may describe places in the Republic rather than the north. Check a northern location independently before travelling.

Use a light touch

Take binoculars, water, sun protection and a field guide. Stay on established paths, avoid nests and do not use playback or flash near wildlife. Wetlands and beaches may have seasonal access restrictions, especially near turtle nesting areas. Our turtle guide explains why an evening beach visit needs extra care.

Make a realistic route

For a first outing, choose one area near your base rather than driving between distant sites. The walking guide covers the Beşparmak Mountains, while the Karpaz guide helps with the remote peninsula. Ask a local nature group about current access and recent observations; that is more useful than an old list of sightings.

Record and share responsibly

Note the date, habitat and behaviour as well as a possible identification. Keep the location of sensitive nesting birds private, and follow local conservation guidance if submitting observations. Weather can make exposed viewpoints unpleasant or unsafe; use the seasonal guide plus a current forecast before a long walk.
