Choose the landscape and season

The Kyrenia or Beşparmak range has a mix of broad forest tracks and narrower paths. The eastern hills around Kantara and the quieter Karpaz coast offer different terrain. Spring and autumn often suit longer walks better than peak summer heat; winter rain can make rock and paths slippery. Use a current forecast, ask locally about access and choose a route you can finish in daylight.

The Beşparmak trail and shorter walks

The Visit North Cyprus tourism guide describes the long-distance Beşparmak Mountain Trail as 18 stages across roughly 260 km, from the western coast towards Cape Zafer. That is a multi-day undertaking, not a single excursion. Use its stage brochures and current local advice to choose a manageable section; confirm the start, finish and return transport before setting out. A castle visit is not automatically an easy hike. St Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara have steep steps and exposed sections even when reached by car.

Plan a mountain walk responsibly

Carry water, sun protection, grippy shoes and a charged phone; do not rely on continuous reception. Some roads and tracks near the range are restricted. Follow signs and avoid photographing military areas. The driving guide helps with approach roads. If you have only half a day, choose one signed local route instead of attempting a through-stage without a pickup.

Go beyond the ridge

For a slower nature outing, use the Karpaz itinerary and choose one short coastal walk rather than racing between viewpoints. Our Alagadi guide explains how to visit a nesting beach with conservation in mind. Turtle activity should be arranged through the conservation team, and wildlife should never be handled or approached for a photograph.

Low-impact choices

Stay on established paths where possible, take litter away, do not collect plants or archaeological objects, and keep noise low around nesting areas. A local guide can help with route choice and access, particularly on unfamiliar mountain trails. Confirm the walk's length, ascent, meeting point, insurance and cancellation policy before paying.

Make the day practical

Start early enough for a rest and a change of plan. Give someone your route and expected return time. If a trail is closed, unsafe or unclear, choose a shorter signed walk or a village stop instead of pushing on.
