A demanding hilltop visit

Buffavento is a high, remote castle between St Hilarion and Kantara. Reaching its upper remains involves a substantial uphill walk with steep steps; it is not an easy roadside viewpoint. Its name is often linked with the winds at the summit, an apt reminder to check conditions before setting out. Current access and open sections should be confirmed locally.

Judge the effort honestly

Take grippy footwear, water and sun protection, and leave enough daylight for the descent. Exposed stone can be slippery after rain and the upper path may feel uncomfortable for anyone uneasy with heights. Turn back if conditions deteriorate. The hiking guide covers general mountain preparation.

Plan the approach

A car or arranged driver is usually needed to reach the access point. Download directions and confirm a return pickup rather than relying on a passing taxi. If you are based around Kyrenia, allow for the driving as well as the climb. Do not combine Buffavento with another strenuous castle just to fit a checklist.

Choose the right castle

St Hilarion offers a more established visitor route, while Kantara suits an eastern itinerary. The castle overview compares all three. If anyone in your group needs step-free access, ask about current conditions before travelling; historic mountain fortifications are not a safe assumption for accessible routes.
