Solo travellers
Choose accommodation with a clear arrival plan and a way to contact the host. Share your itinerary with someone you trust, keep an offline copy of important details and arrange the journey home before going somewhere remote.
Solo female travellers
Comfort levels differ. Consider a staffed reception, a well-explained transfer and routes you feel comfortable walking. If a situation feels wrong, leave for a public place and seek help. Read official guidance for women travelling abroad for more preparation.
Family travel
Confirm child seats with the transport provider and inspect pool access when you arrive. Agree a meeting point with older children, keep medication and essentials in hand luggage and leave quieter periods between outings. The details of a particular property matter more than a broad “family-friendly” label.
Driving and getting around

Swimming and beach safety
Judge the water on the day. Follow flags, posted instructions and lifeguard advice, and supervise children closely. A beautiful or sheltered-looking beach is not proof of safe swimming. Do not assume remote beaches have rescue cover.
Summer heat
Plan exposed walks for more comfortable hours, carry water and allow shaded breaks. Adjust the day to the forecast and to the needs of children, older travellers and anyone with a health condition. Money and ATMs
Use a machine in a location where you feel comfortable, shield the keypad and review the currency conversion and fees before accepting a withdrawal. Keep a second way to pay separately from your main wallet. Do not display large amounts of cash.
Nightlife
Arrange a dependable way home, keep track of your drinks and belongings and stay in contact with your group. Seek help immediately if you feel unexpectedly unwell. The official safety guidance discusses crime and personal safety risks.
Healthcare and travel insurance
Check that your policy explicitly covers your itinerary in the north, intended activities, treatment and possible repatriation. Do not assume a health card settles all costs or applies to every provider. Save your insurer’s assistance number and review the official list of hospitals in the north.
Emergency information
For a medical emergency, call 112 and ask for an ambulance. Give a precise location or map pin and seek help from your host if you need local assistance. Keep your insurer, accommodation and transport contact details available offline. Do not delay urgent care while checking a website.
