Check the geographic wording
Do not assume a policy labelled “Cyprus” automatically covers every part of your itinerary in the same way. Ask the insurer in writing whether accommodation, activities and healthcare in northern Cyprus are included. If you will cross the Green Line, identify both regions and your arrival airport when asking. Our north–south comparison explains why a whole-island trip needs specific questions.
Medical care and evacuation
Check emergency-treatment limits, pre-existing-condition declarations, prescription medicines and medical evacuation. Ask who authorises treatment and how you contact the assistance team abroad. The UK government warns that consular assistance in the north is limited; insurance cannot replace emergency planning. Save the policy number and assistance telephone offline, and read our medical guide for what to prepare.
Activities and vehicles
Scuba diving, hiking, quad biking, boat trips or other activities may need extra cover or have depth, guide or equipment conditions. Ask the provider about the activity details before buying a policy. A rental vehicle also needs its own valid motor insurance; ordinary travel insurance does not prove that a hired car can cross the Green Line. The driving guide explains the separate car questions.
Flights, transfers and cancellations
Compare cover for missed connections, airline disruption, cancellation for an insured reason and luggage delay. Separate tickets may leave a gap when the first flight is late. If you have a pre-booked transfer, ask who pays for extra waiting time or a new journey after disruption. Keep receipts and written communications. The UK route guide helps identify the journey components that may need protection.
Read exclusions before paying
Policies differ on alcohol-related incidents, unattended belongings, declared medical conditions, government travel advice and high-risk activities. Check the excess as well as the headline limit. Request clarification directly from the insurer; a travel website cannot interpret your contract or guarantee a claim. Review the policy again when your itinerary changes, especially if you add a border crossing or new activity.
