Driving side and getting started
Traffic keeps to the left. Before leaving the rental handover, adjust mirrors and seats, identify the controls and ask about anything unfamiliar. Follow posted limits and road signs. Plan a simple first journey if you arrive tired or after dark.
Licence requirements
Take your original valid driving licence and check the operator’s requirements for your issuing country, age and length of driving experience. Ask whether an international driving permit or additional document is needed. A rule for one nationality or company should not be assumed to apply to every renter.
Choosing a hire car
Compare the overall contract through our car-hire page. Confirm luggage space, additional drivers, child seats and the return location. Photograph the car at collection and record existing damage with the supplier before driving away.
Insurance and rental restrictions
Ask for the excess, deposit and exclusions in writing. Check cover for tyres, glass, the underside, theft and roadside recovery. Tell the supplier about mountain or peninsula trips and avoid roads excluded by the contract. Buying additional liability cover does not necessarily insure damage to the rental car.
Fuel and service planning
Confirm the correct fuel and return policy at collection. Keep the receipt from your final refill. For a trip towards the far Karpaz, fill up before the less serviced part of the journey and ask your host about the nearest reliable fuel stop.
Parking in towns
Use signed parking and check local restrictions before leaving the car. In historic streets, consider parking outside the busiest area and walking. Ask the accommodation for its own parking instructions rather than assuming a space outside the entrance is available.
Road conditions and navigation
Expect the main route and a village lane to offer very different driving conditions. Save an offline map, but use signs and local advice when a suggested shortcut looks unsuitable. Slow down for pedestrians, animals, bends and surfaces you cannot clearly see.
Crossing the Green Line
Get the rental company’s written permission for the exact crossing plan and ask what insurance and recovery support remain valid on each side. Check your own entry eligibility too. Read the Larnaca arrival guide when choosing where to collect a car.
Driving to Karpaz
Use our two-day road trip to avoid squeezing every stop into a long return drive. Keep extra water in the car, leave beach tracks off the route and turn back while there is comfortable daylight if the day runs late.
Kyrenia Mountains
Choose mountain roads in daylight, allow extra space at bends and stop only where you can pull fully clear of traffic. Check the weather before a castle visit. A longer main-road route can be a better choice than an unfamiliar steep shortcut.
Breakdowns and accidents
Save the rental company’s emergency number before setting off. If something happens, stop safely, keep people away from moving traffic and contact the appropriate emergency service when needed; call 112 for an ambulance. Notify the supplier promptly and follow its reporting instructions before arranging repairs.
Routes to consider
For an easier first outing, combine Kyrenia and Bellapais. Another day can focus on Famagusta and Salamis. Reserve the far peninsula for the Karpaz plan with a confirmed overnight stop.
