Choose the collection point first
Ask the supplier exactly where the vehicle will be handed over: Ercan arrivals, a hotel, or a meeting point after a Green Line crossing. A quoted “airport pick-up” can mean a shuttle to an off-site desk. Confirm desk hours, a contact number and the procedure if your flight lands late. For Ercan, our arrival guide gives other onward options.
Check crossing and insurance restrictions
Vehicles hired in the Republic of Cyprus may lack cover for the north, and some firms do not permit their cars to cross. Ask the rental company and insurer directly, obtain the required documents and confirm where any additional cover can be bought. The Green Line guide explains why pedestrian and vehicle arrangements differ. If you will collect a northern rental after crossing, arrange the transfer to that collection point separately.
Compare the contract, not only the day rate
Ask about deposit, excess, fuel policy, mileage, driver age, extra drivers, child seats, breakdown contact and damage-photo procedure. Inspect tyres and bodywork at handover, photograph the vehicle and agree the return fuel level. The car-hire page helps you compare suppliers; driving advice covers roads and route planning.
Plan the first and last hour
Get the exact return address and allow time for fuel, inspection and the shuttle, if any. For a night arrival, ask whether the route to your villa is suitable and whether navigation data will work. A pre-booked transfer may be easier for the first night, with rental collection the next day.
Before paying
Keep the current quote and rental terms together. Verify that your licence, passport and payment card meet the supplier's requirements. Do not leave your passport as a deposit; the UK travel advisory specifically warns against this practice.
