1. Check your own entry position
Read your government's current Cyprus advice and ask the relevant authorities if your nationality or travel history creates questions. UK guidance says time in the north counts toward the Republic of Cyprus's visitor limit and warns about entering through Ercan before later crossing south. Keep your passport or accepted travel document with you. This guide cannot replace an official decision about entry.
2. Choose a crossing that matches your transport
The Ledra/Lokmacı and Ledra Palace crossings in Nicosia are pedestrian-only. Other crossings serve vehicles, but operating details can change. Check the Republic of Cyprus's official crossing-point list before setting off. For an on-foot city visit, use the walled-city itinerary after crossing.
3. Check the car before driving
Do not assume a vehicle hired in the south may cross or remains insured in the north. Ask the hire company for permission and written cover details; additional insurance may be needed. Our airport rental checklist addresses pick-up and handover, while driving advice covers the northern roads.
4. Allow time for document checks
At the crossing, follow the signs and staff instructions on both sides. Queues vary. Keep booking details and your return or onward plan accessible, and check customs limits before carrying purchases back south. If a transfer is meeting you beyond the checkpoint, agree the precise side and meeting point.
5. Plan the onward journey
From Larnaca Airport, a booked transfer may be simplest when luggage or late arrival is involved. The Larnaca guide and transfer page help compare options. Keep a phone number for your accommodation and allow buffer time for the return flight.
