Start with your actual route
Transport is easiest to choose after you know your accommodation address and the places you want to visit. Kyrenia harbour, a remote Karpaz beach and a hillside villa have very different needs. Plot each stop on a map, including the last part of the journey from the main road. Our where-to-stay guide can help you choose a base that reduces unnecessary transfers. The cheapest option on paper is not always the most practical after a late arrival or with luggage.
What public transport can do
The tourism office describes local minibuses, often called dolmuş, connecting towns and some villages on main roads. That does not amount to a guaranteed door-to-door timetable. Ask locally where to board, when the last service returns and whether it runs on your travel date. Keep the destination written down in English and Turkish where useful. A town-to-town journey may be straightforward while a beach, archaeological site or mountain castle still needs a taxi or a long walk from the road.
Airport shuttle or private transfer
Check whether a current shuttle serves your arrival airport, town and flight time, then ask where it actually stops. A hotel shuttle, scheduled shared service and private car are different products. Compare the full price for everyone in your group, luggage space and waiting policy if the flight is late. The Ercan arrival guide and airport-transfer page cover the questions to confirm before payment.
When a car makes sense
A rental car gives flexibility for dispersed beaches and village or mountain stops, but adds parking, fuel, deposits and driving responsibility. Check the collection point, insurance, child seats and any restriction on crossing the Green Line. Our driving guide and airport pick-up checklist cover those details. A central town stay with one or two organised day trips may cost less than hiring a car for the whole week.
Combine modes without overplanning
Many visitors can use a transfer for arrival, walk locally and hire a car only for selected days. Others prefer a taxi after dinner and public transport for daylight town trips. Get a price before a longer taxi journey and keep a return contact. Tourist-office transport pages can lag behind current schedules or prices, so verify each service with its operator or your host. Avoid building an itinerary around the last bus unless you have confirmed it for that day.
