A landmark of the walled city

Büyük Han, often translated as the Great Inn, is a historic caravanserai in the northern part of Nicosia. The tourism office describes an Ottoman courtyard building with former accommodation and trading rooms; today visitors can find craft spaces and cafés. Look at the layout before rushing to a shop. The Lefkoşa guide places the Han among the city’s other old streets and markets.

What to look for

Walk the galleries and pause in the courtyard to understand how rooms face inward. A central small prayer space is part of the building’s historic arrangement. The official guide records restoration and changed uses over time; present shops are not a reconstruction of every original trade. Read any on-site interpretation and check which rooms are open to visitors rather than entering work areas.

Build a short route nearby

The municipal market, Selimiye quarter and nearby lanes make a useful cluster for a half day on foot. Our Selimiye guide covers the active place of worship; the walled-city itinerary gives an order without promising that every attraction is open. In summer, plan a shaded break and carry water.

Food and crafts without a fixed shopping list

A courtyard coffee can be a pleasant pause, but businesses and opening hours change. Compare menus, ask the price before ordering and buy a craft only if its maker and material are clear. The North Nicosia food walk offers additional choices beyond the Han. Ask before photographing people or working studios.

Getting there and crossing

The old town is walkable from central pedestrian crossing routes, but entry requirements depend on the traveller. If arriving from the south, check the official Green Line rules and use an authorised checkpoint; our crossing guide explains the questions. If coming by vehicle, plan parking outside the tightest historic streets. Verify current opening hours locally before travelling solely for this one site.
