Start inside the walls

Lefkoşa is the Turkish name for North Nicosia. Its walled centre is best explored on foot, with short distances between old streets, courtyards and markets. Büyük Han is a natural orientation point, while the nearby municipal market offers a different everyday view of the city. Go early in hot weather and let opening hours shape your route rather than planning every doorway in advance.

Food and a slower afternoon

Make lunch part of the visit: ask a local café about the day’s dishes, try a coffee and leave time for the streets around the market. Our North Nicosia food walk gives a more detailed route. Respect worship and working spaces, and check before photographing stallholders or interiors.

Crossing and getting there

If arriving from the Republic of Cyprus, use an authorised checkpoint and carry documents required for your nationality. The pedestrian crossing at Ledra Street connects central Nicosia with the northern old town, but entry rules and opening arrangements can change. Read the Green Line guide and current official advice before setting out.

Make it a day trip

A city day is easier when you choose a few stops and allow a shaded break. Coming from Kyrenia or Famagusta, confirm the return transport before an evening meal. For architectural context, see our walled-city itinerary. Do not assume museums, craft shops or restaurants are open every day.
