Start with a walkable loop
From the Ledra/Lokmacı pedestrian crossing, walk toward the historic inns and market streets. Büyük Han is a restored Ottoman caravanserai and a useful orientation point; the market area gives a different view of daily city life. Continue toward Selimiye Mosque, a former Gothic cathedral, if it is open to visitors. Respect worship and dress requirements; access may change for restoration or services.
Understand the walls
The Venetian fortifications encircle the old city on both sides of today's Green Line. The city's gates and bastions are best understood with a map rather than trying to trace the whole circuit in one short visit. The north's Kyrenia Gate is away from the pedestrian crossing; allow walking time and shade breaks. Our food guide suggests places to pause.
Crossing from the south
Carry the travel documents appropriate to your nationality and check current official entry advice. Ledra/Lokmacı is for pedestrians; do not plan to drive through it. Our step-by-step crossing guide covers the practical distinction and links to official guidance. If arriving from elsewhere in the north, the driving guide helps you plan parking outside the busiest lanes.
Build the day around opening times
Make a short priority list of two or three interiors, then leave space for the streets between them. Ask about current museum hours and any renovation before setting off. Summer afternoons can be hot inside the walls; carry water and choose an early start.
Extend the visit thoughtfully
A food stop and a careful architectural walk make a full half-day. If you have more time, explore the southern walled-city streets as a separate loop rather than rushing through both sides.
