A building with layered history

Selimiye Mosque in the Lefkoşa walled city occupies a former Gothic cathedral. The present building therefore shows religious and architectural histories from more than one period. Treat it as an active place of worship as well as a landmark. The tourism office gives a historical overview, while our culture guide connects it to other sites around the island.

Check access before entering

Prayer times, restoration works or religious events can change visitor access. Ask locally whether non-worship visitors may enter at that time and follow posted instructions. Dress modestly, remove shoes when required, speak quietly and avoid photographing worshippers without permission. Do not assume a guided tour or interior access is always available because a travel article showed it in a previous year.

See the surrounding quarter

The Bedesten and market streets are close enough to make a coherent old-town walk. The Büyük Han guide covers another architectural stop, and the Lefkoşa guide explains the wider area. Allow time for a food or coffee break without blocking narrow lanes or entrance routes.

Understand the architecture

Look at the cathedral’s Gothic form alongside later adaptations, but avoid overconfident dates from a short online caption. The building’s history has been documented through several phases. An informed local guide or on-site interpretation can help distinguish what is visible now from what has been restored. Respect barriers even when a corner looks photographically appealing.

Plan the journey

A city-centre visit is best combined with other nearby stops rather than a long transfer for one doorway. If crossing from the southern side of Nicosia, consult the Green Line guide and current official advice. Check a weather forecast and comfortable walking shoes for uneven old-town surfaces. This page does not guarantee interior entry on any particular day.
